Sore Joints and Muscles this Winter? These 4 Simple Tips Can Help!

by Joy Organics Co-Founder and CEO, Joy Smith

Let’s face it, the harsh winter weather is uncomfortable for everyone. But it can be even tougher to survive the cold, damp months – if you suffer from joint and muscle pain.

Which is why I want to share 4 often-overlooked tips to help you soothe aching joints…reduce swelling…and improve your mobility during the cold season.

1. Rub Chili Pepper on Your Joints.

If your joints and muscles are sensitive to cold, chili peppers could be the answer! A 2016 meta-analysis found scientific evidence that capsaicin (the active ingredient in chili peppers) can help relieve pain and reduce swelling.

But a word of warning. Rubbing chili peppers directly onto your skin can cause chili burn. Which is why we recommend using a capsaicin cream or ointment to soothe your winter aches.

These topical formulas are one of the best ways to get all the pain-relieving benefits of capsaicin – without feeling like you’ve set your skin on fire!

2.Drink a Mug of “Golden Hot Chocolate”

When it’s cold outside, there’s nothing better than warming up with a hot drink. But here’s a winter drink with added pain-relieving power…

It’s called the “Golden Hot Chocolate.”

You start by blending almond milk with cocoa powder. Then you add maple syrup, cinnamon and the magic ingredient, turmeric.

Studies show that turmeric can help reduce joint inflammation – and relieve pain and stiffness…making this drink delicious and soothing.

Want to take your Golden Hot Chocolate a step further, to make it even more comforting? Then why not add a dash of CBD oil to your steaming mug of cocoa.

CBD’s natural, active compound can help block pain signals on their way to your brain. Which can give you a double whammy of pain relief – when mixed with inflammation-busting turmeric (and your favorite hot drink).

3. Play in the Snow

Countless studies show that exercise is the key to reducing pain…inflammation…and stiffness. But when it’s frosty outside it can be tough to motivate yourself to get out and exercise. So, what if you could use the winter weather to your advantage this year – instead of hiding indoors from the cold?

According to the Arthritis Foundation, cross-country skiing is a great way to reduce pain in winter…even if you’ve never skied before! Why?

“You can get a moderate to vigorous total-body workout. And, unlike downhill skiing, there’s little twisting and turning of the knees.”

Now, winter sports might not be the obvious choice for those in pain…but if the Arthritis Foundation recommends playing out in the snow – who are we to argue?

So go ahead and brush off your old skis – and enjoy this fun, mobility-boosting winter sport before the snow’s all gone.

4. Relax More and Get Happy

Could the winter blues be triggering you to feel more pain and discomfort? Science seems to think so!

A team of researchers at King’s College, London, recently discovered a link between low mood and pain perception. Turns out, when you’re feeling blue – you’re also more likely to experience higher levels of pain and discomfort.

Which could be part of the reason why joint and muscle pain feels more intense in winter. The solution? It’s to beat the winter blues by relaxing more – and getting happy!

But that’s easier said than done, right? Especially during the cold, gloomy winter. Which is why we love taking CBD – to relax and boost our mood.

CBD works by mimicking stress-busting…adrenaline-neutralizing compounds, naturally-produced by your own body.

Once circulating in your system, CBD safely attaches itself to your nervous system receptors – where it gets to work to help steady your heart rate…stabilize your blood pressure…and melt away swirling thoughts.

The result? Many people report feeling calmer, happier, more optimistic, and more in control – after a soothing dose of CBD.
